Premier A

The closest game was that between HGHS Langman and FTNC Premier Reserve. At end of first quarter HGHS led by 15 goals to 7. The second quarter was a draw with the score being 26 goals to 18. HGHS were able to increase their lead in the third quarter to be ahead by 45 goals to 29. FTNC Premier Reserve won the final quarter to reduce the gap with the final score being 57 goals to 45. HGHS Langman secured the win, bouncing back confidently after a challenging run of games in recent weeks. Returning from injury, Awarua Twidle made an immediate impact at goal keep and goal defence, producing crucial turnovers to halt the opposition’s momentum. She was well supported by the defensive unit, with Mila Williams applying relentless pressure out the front in wing defence, alongside the tireless work rate of Sarah-Kate Nicholas at centre. Elise McKay was a standout in the first half in wing defence, helping to build sustained defensive pressure through the midcourt. This effort created valuable opportunities for goal keep Calais Topia-Chesley, who capitalised by winning key ball in the circle. Overall, it was a well-rounded team performance, with defensive intensity and cohesion proving the difference. For FTNC Premier Reserve they have had continued team disruptions through injury, so this game was going to be a hard task. Maria Clune-Zammitt at centre led from the front with her positive attitude, driving defence, and vision to look to the shooters. All four shooters had great shooting stats this week which has been something that needed to improve on. The new shooting combination of Jorja Stewart at goal shoot and Chelcie Rowe at goal attack found good connections and were fed well by Simone Brandt at wing attack and Maria Clune-Zammitt. Jorja Stewart's accuracy and ability to take the ball strongly (while up against a very strong defensive unit) continues to show her growth in this team. Holly Proudlock and Emma Ruske at goal keep worked on confusing the space and forcing long shots. Mirren Simpson at wing defence provided consistent centre pass backup and punched through the middle to bring the ball down the court. As a team it was great full court defence and overall pleased to close the score line from the last encounter.

Turangawaewae Premier and Lodge Rangers Premier had a fast paced and competitive game. At end of first quarter Rangers Premier led by 16 goals to 15 and they increased their lead in the second quarter to be ahead 33 goals to 26 at half time. Rangers Premier had a massive third quarter to stretch their lead with the score being 50 goals to 35. The final quarter was close with Turangawaewae winning this by a goal. The fulltime score was 63 goals to 49. For Rangers Premier it was another tight tussle for them where every possession counted. Karlie Alexander at wing attack ran some great lines under physical pressure, was dominant at centre pass and fed the shooters well. The team made headway off the back of some fantastic defensive pressure and calm play on attack. It was pleasing to get all available players on the court and to come away with the win. For Turangawaewae it has been a step up for the team moving to Premier A and each game is giving the team plenty to learn from. It was awesome to come up against the top of the table team and it showed the team where we were at and what we need to work on to compete at this level. With only eight players available, they showed resilience and worked hard until right to the final whistle. A stand out was Pare Kaihau who shifted from wing defence to centre making a huge impact through the middle with good connections with the wing attack and shooters and keeping the attack flowing. Another strong performance came from Birdie Potts who usually plays wing defence but stepped into the defensive circle alongside Pourewa Ruri-Clarke. Together they applied strong pressure on the shooters with Pourewa’s guidance helping hold the circle and keep the opposition working hard for every shot. There is plenty to build on but the team is showing adaptability and continues to grow.

University of Waikato Premier were too good for FTNC Premier in their game this week. At half time University Premier led by 38 goals to 20 and they won the game by 64 goals to 44. FTNC Premier won the final quarter by two goals.

Premier B

St Peter’s Premier and HGHS OG Premier had a nail bitting and close game. At end of first quarter HGHS OG led by 14 goals to 12 but at half time St Peter’s had taken the lead with the score being 30 goals to 24. HGHS OG in the third quarter clawed back some of the deficient with the score being 40 goals to 37 and they also won the final quarter to have the game end in a draw. The final score was 50 goals each. After a close contest in the first round, both teams knew this was always going to be another tightly fought match—and it certainly didn't disappoint. The first quarter was incredibly even, with both teams matching each other. St Peter's gained the upper hand in the second quarter through some outstanding defensive pressure, creating valuable turnovers. Combined with excellent ball security through the court and accurate shooting, they were able to build a handy lead heading into halftime. As expected, HGHSOG fought their way back into the game in the second half, setting up a thrilling finish. With only eight players available, the St Peter’s players dug deep and showed incredible resilience. They worked tirelessly, never gave up, and continued to compete with determination until the end. A special mention to the shooters, who missed only two goals for the entire match—an outstanding display of accuracy under pressure. The team showed effort, commitment, and ability to stay connected throughout a demanding game. HGHS OG fought out a thrilling draw in a tightly contested match where neither side was able to break away. It was an even battle from start to finish, with the result in doubt until the final whistle. Wing defence Caya Haggie was a standout, winning crucial turnovers before the ball reached the circle. Wing attack Iwa Hona consistently hit the circle edge and delivered pinpoint feeds into the shooters, creating quality scoring opportunities throughout the game. Captain Kharli McMillan led from the front with her best shooting performance of the season, while also working tirelessly outside the circle to create opportunities for her teammates. It was a hard-fought team performance, with both sides showing plenty of determination in an entertaining contest.

St Paul’s Collegiate Premier and Allied HOB Premier also had a close game. At end of first quarter St Paul’s led by 10 goals to 7 and they led by 21 goals to 18 at half time. The third and final quarters were a draw with the score at three quarter time being 30 goals to 27 and the fulltime score being 39 goals to 36. The St Paul’s team recorded a pleasing win after a strong and composed performance across all areas of the court. A fast start saw St Paul’s take the lead into the first break, and the team maintained that three-goal advantage for the remainder of the match. It was a solid team effort, with players working well together to apply defensive pressure and transition the ball effectively.

There was a noticeable improvement in attack, with greater focus on accuracy and variety in play, allowing the team to convert opportunities and maintain momentum. Overall, it was an encouraging performance that reflected the team’s continued growth and development. For Allied HOB they showcased new combinations this week with Larns Haumaha at wing attack and Cenedra Haumaha at wing defence being advanced from the Reserves team.  Both players bought energy and tenacity in their roles. Te Moana Moetu at goal keep created a lot of disruption for the St Pauls attacking end turning over valuable ball.

Ngā Taiātea Wharekura Premier and Te Awamutu Senior Premier also had a close game. At half time, the score was 27 goals to 22 to Ngā Taiātea Wharekura Premier and they won the game 56 goals to 47.
