Premier B
In the Premier B competition there were a number of close games this week.
The game between Northern United Sports Club Mamba and Tūrangawaewae Premier can only be described as a battle with nothing in this game. At end of the first quarter Tūrangawaewae led by 11 goals to 9 but by half time this was reduced to have them leading 21 goals to 20. By the end of the third quarter the game was drawn at 31 goals each. Then in the final quarter Tūrangawaewae were able to creep ahead in the final minutes winning the game 47 goals to 41. For Tūrangawaewae they acknowledge the previous premier team that did the mahi and got them a seat at the table. The team are all settling into the new environment with some new players to the club and team. Expectations set are slowly being displayed on court which in time will bring growth as a whole team. The combinations that took the court will more than likely be the foundation to the end of season. Overall pleased with the progress being made and that the team is staying grounded. Small steps will become strides for the team. For Mamba it was a great game with it being neck and neck. Proud of the team as they put in a massive effort and really held their own. Always a privilege to go up against the Tūrangawaewae wāhine — such a strong side, and the Mamba team did incredibly well to match their intensity.Turangawaewae Premier GA Hariata White shoots while being defended by NUSC Mamba GK & GD |
University of Waikato Premier Reserves were put to the test this week by Waikato Diocesan for Girls Premier with them having a slim one goal lead at end of first quarter with the score being 8 goals to 7. By half time University Premier Reserve were leading by 19 goals to 13. They maintained this in the third and final quarters, marginally increasing their score each quarter. The final score was 34 goals to 27. For University Premier Reserves it was another close game this week, however, the team held their wit and came away with a win. With some players not available it was an opportunity to try new combinations. The first quarter tested the speed and endurance of the team. Moving Kellie Phillips from goal keep to wing defence was an asset in attacking the ball through court and she was the player of the game. Desire and intent was on full display throughout the court. For Waikato Diocesan it highlighted the strides the team has made – the team didn't just play; they challenged the opposition and played well. Hannah Wallace at wing defence had a standout performance, getting crucial balls and creating turnovers with her tireless efforts. Olivia Wrathall was dominant at goal attack, moving with purpose and sinking those shots when it counted. And Alexandra Hull played a strong game at wing attack, opening up the midcourt with timely drives to the ball. The team are building on combinations and trusting each other, everyone is understanding their job as the team prepares for upcoming matches and, ultimately, the UNISS tournament.
Vetora Melville Premier C Ashley Tualaulelei defended by Marist Verdettes Premier C |
Melville Vetora Premier and Marist Verdettes Premier had a low scoring and close game. At the end of first quarter the game was drawn at 10 goals each. Then at half time Melville Premier led by 19 goals to 14. They were able to further increase their lead in the third quarter with the score being 30 goals to 22. The final quarter was close again with the fulltime score being 38 goals to 29. For Melville it was a good game all round with excellent defence by Mila Graham and Kyla Turner followed by solid shooting by Sera Taei at the other end of the court. The team has had a tough season with player numbers, however the never give up attitude by the solid group of players there got the win. For Marist it was a great game for them. The team has worked hard at training and had specific goals which helped with this game. Marist have struggled with injuries this year and had a different shooting circle combination for this game but made it work with a strong performance from all the players. It was a huge effort this week into maintaining basic structures, staying strong and resilient and it showed in the final result.
